Triangle existing home sales plunge, but prices rise

The Triangle Multiple Listing Service on Tuesday unveiled October statistics for home re-sales in the area comprising Wake, Durham, Orange and Johnston counties.

The MLS numbers show 1,067 closed sales of existing homes during October – a decrease of 40 percent year over year. The average price paid for those homes was $230,000, up by 4 percent from October 2009.

There are more existing homes on the market. Inventory increased by 14 percent, to 10,660.

The numbers mirror the overall housing sales numbers released by Triangle MLS last week. That report, which factors in new home sales with home re-sales, found a 37 percent reduction in the number of sales and a 4 percent increase in average sales price, to $228,604.
